I want to put the spotlight on my friend Kevin Dahlquist for his amazing results with Insanity Max 30. I love his story because it is relatable to me and so many others. Here are his own words.
- Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
My life before I started Insanity Max 30 was pretty tiring to say the least. I went from being very active and working out during high school thru college to not at all once I got a full-time job and started having children with my wife. The profession I am in allowed myself to eat out almost every day and most of the time for free by taking customers or traveling. This allowed me to think that I should get the most tasty thing since I wasn’t paying for it! This allowed the weight to explode over 5 years. I now have 3 children and I was just getting exhausted!
- What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
What finally broke me down was actually moving back to where I grew up. I knew I had gained some good weight, and the last thing I wanted was to run into familiar faces from my past and know they were thinking, “Wow, he has gained some weight!” I didn’t want that. I also didn’t want to let my kids to know only an overweight dad. I knew that if I just got started and had a support channel like 30 Days to a Better Me, I would be able to get going. Shakeology was a great way to jump start my journey as well.
- What is the greatest challenge your faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody help you overcome that challenge?
The greatest challenge I had was FOOD! Work, like for most people, is stressful at times. I loved eating sweets and caloric foods to trick my mind into believing it was reducing stress. In reality, it was making it worse because I felt worse about myself. I didn’t like to look in the mirror because I knew what I was becoming.
Shakeology helped change that issue. It took about a month for it to come into full effect and helped reduce my cravings and especially eliminated soda from diet. I still have a rare occasional soda, but nothing like I used to. Insanity Max 30 has helped me feel better about myself and have now been doing it for about 4 months. I am able to wear clothes that I haven’t been able to wear in years and getting comments from people at work about my change. I look forward to the workout and the sweat that results from it. Believe it or not, I prefer working out in the evening after the kids are in bed and the day is behind me.
- What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
I liked it because I have always been a more aerobic type of person. I ran cross country and track when I was younger. At this point, I didn’t have to use weights or pull up bars. I was able to use my own body weight and movement to get the results I wanted. I also liked the fact that it is high intensity and only lasted 30 minutes. Anyone and everyone has 30 minutes to workout and can stay mentally focused for 30 minutes. Plus, I was able to squeeze it in on Saturdays while my youngest was napping, keeping my wife happy because I am still able to help out and don’t have to leave the house to exercise.
- Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
I was able to lose about 20 pounds and feel much better about myself. It has inspired me to know that I can focus on a goal and can meet and/or exceed those. It has allowed me to use these results as a launch board to bigger and better goals and to be able to help others get the same results. I am proud of the fact I was able to finish and start again and make healthier food choices. I am still allowing myself a sweet here or there, but I don’t jump into the deep end like I used to!
- How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
I am just happier plain and simple. I enjoy working out again and I am enjoying being able to wear clothes that I’ve always wanted to get back in to. I have also started to help others, mainly my intermediate family, with making good choices. They have started with Shakeology, but I’m sure a program will ensue. Best of all, my children watch and sometimes participate in my workouts. I want them to know this about me versus the old me.
- How did participating in a challenge group help you reach your goals? How did your group support you and keep you accountable.
This was probably the key component in getting me started and keep moving. We all know that starting and maintaining the momentum when you are out of shape is the hardest part. By being able to check in every day allowed myself to stay true to the path. Seeing others going through the same thing as me and failing at times helped me stay consistent. The group is very supportive and instructive as well.
- How did your Team Beachbody Coach support you on your journey?
He did a great job commenting on all my post entries. It’s nice to see that someone is actually reading and staying stride-for-stride in your journey. You can’t do this alone. As said before, you most likely will fall, but a supportive coach helps you jump right back up and get through the obstacle.
I have used Energy and Endurance and Creatine during my journey. It definitely helped and is anything, made my mind think it was helping! E&E helped especially on long tiring days when I worked out at night. The creatine helped my muscle mass recover and strengthen.
Way to go Kevin! excited to your continued transformation.
